1908 was an exciting time to be close to Clark and Addison Streets. It was the last year the Chicago Cubs ever won the World Series.....and the Swedish Baptist association was breaking ground on an extraordinary group of buildings that would be their Church and Seminary.
Great pride and detail went into building the Church. It's impressive exterior architectural design was just a glimpse of more to come. Stepping inside, their turn of the century craftmanship is nothing short of inspiring. A hand cranked, weighted cable and pully system was designed to literally lift the north wall of the main auditorium off it's feet, soaring out of sight and into the ceiling, becoming virtually undectable. For nearly 100 years, this pully system has enabled the auditorium to nearly double its size. The east wall of the auditorium houses an enormous built in pipe organ that still fills the room with a sound that transends it's years.
As the demographics of the neighborhood began to change over the last 20 years, the use of the property came into question. In the early 90's the adjacent "seminary" building nearly met it's fate with the wrecking ball but was sold and made into condos. Now in its 90's, the "Church building" began to show signs of age and an uncertain future. In the spring of 2007 Brixen Ivy Ministries was created and then purchased the building, securing it's destiny.
The building has since undergone some much needed restoration.
For two years now, it is the meeting place for a vibrant Church on Sunday's and a wonderful facility for the community the rest of the week.
